My co-workers have accused me of having a sense of perceived security that is a bit naive and at times almost foolish. Maybe that is true. I would like to believe the best of others, and that no ill could befall me living in a safe community, surrounded by seemingly safe people. Yet, if I read the newspaper or listen to the evening news, I have to admit that it seems like the world we live in locally, nationally and internationally seems to be less secure with each passing day.
Maybe we all have a false sense of safety that is actually encouraged in 'proper' society. Why would a person choose to live under a cloud of suspicion and fear? Who likes to see the world as the glass half empty? We are much happier if we choose to be blissfully unaware of the dangers that indeed exist even in our 'safe' little realities.
Six years ago I mistakenly assumed that my teen sons would be safe driving to school in the daylight, on clear roads, during the daytime hours, on familiar roads. I thought the real danger existed during nighttime driving...never at 7 a.m. However, my sense of perceived security was shattered January 17, 2003 when Greg's car left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole...close to home, on clear roads, during daylight hours. That is why, now, Randy & Steve (and I when time permits) share with teens and parents that 'perceived security' about teen driving can be deadly or debilitating.
Perceived Security can also be dangerous in the realm of Spiritual Warfare.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
Ephesians 6:10-13 tells us that the need is here right now to be prepared for the devil's schemes. That means whether we acknowledge it or not...we are engaged in battle and are not safe on our own. The good news is God provides armor. He provides protection, wisdom and discernment, but the passage above indicates that we must participate...not passively assume that all is well.
The even better news, however, is not that we are guaranteed of a safe, secure and tranquil existence, but that we are assured that no matter what battle we face, God is with us and for us when we are His and He is our Father God. What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31.
So, I am working on acknowledging that ultimately I am dependent on God alone for true security. Eternal Security. Life will never be without its troubles and trials. But I know who has the final victory, and no matter what - I am secure in my future in Him and with Him.
